White Snakeroot: Aids to identification are the smooth, opposite, long—petioled leaves and the white flowers in heads that , together, form a flattish top (corymb). The species name, rugosum (wrinkled), is "inept" according to Gray's Manual of Botany. White Snakeroot causes "milk sickness" if grazed by cattle; this was the cause of President Lincoln's mother's death.
