Moist woodland near swamp.
Spicebush: The leaves and branches have a characteristic spicy odor. These double-tapering ovate leaves are glaborous and vary in size on the same bush. Pale yellow flowers (on twigs at left) are followed by spicy red berries which were used by the colonists in baking. The shrubs have separate flower and leaf buds (the latter smaller and pointed) and separate male and female shrubs.
