cool, moist woodland near a spring
Wood horsetail: Cool, moist woodland. This was a large colony growing near a spring. The Eurasian annual has spread from northern New York, New England and into Canada up to Alaska. The stem on this variety lacks the tiny hooks seen on the ribs of E. sylvaticum. Branches are whorled and generally fork. Fleshy, fertile stems are not shown having disappeared earlier; they bear spores in terminal cones.
