Black-or Sour Gum/Tupelo/Pepperidge: species is sometimes tolerant of drier soils. Habit of branching in different directions — rather unplanned-looking. Long fruiting peduncles 3-6 cm, small dark blue berries chambered pith, blocky "alligator” bark, terminal bud are aids to identificati0n. Leaves turn crimson in the fall.
