Ironwood-popular name; Hornbeam, Musclewood: sinewy gray bark; a small tree. Double-toothed egg-shaped leaves are 1-5" long. Buds are almost square in cross sectionb with bud scales in two rows. Male catkins fall early. Bracts of fruiting aments entire with 1-3 teeth.
