Sweet Gum Tree: as a lawn specimen, popular for relative freedom from insect damage. Star—like 5—7 lobed leaves, turns red-purple in autumn; petioles are 3-5". The gray bark is a source of storax or liquidamber, a resinous exudation or chewable gum. Favoring coastal plain swamps, it is native from Florida to Texas north to southern CT and the midwest. Globular heads of flowers form round, spiny capsules filled mostly with abortive seeds. The fine—grained wood is not strong and may warp or shrink.
