2018 Consortium of Northeastern Herbaria annual meeting

The 2018 Consortium of Northeastern Herbaria annual meeting is being hosted by the University of New Hampshire Hodgdon Herbarium and will be held on June 13 & 14 in Concord and Manchester, New Hampshire. This meeting will be different from previous meetings in that it will consist primarily of field collecting-based activity (vascular plants and/or bryophytes, depending on your interests) in natural areas in the vicinity of Concord. There will be a business meeting and guest speaker in Manchester on the evening of June 13.

Please register for the meeting here.

Agenda

Wednesday, June 13

Day: Field work at Greenough (pronounced "green-oh") Pond in Salisbury. This site is part of the flood control area (Blackwater Reservoir) for the Blackwater River. The last time there was a notable flood here was in 1987, when water levels were 10 feet higher than the pond’s usual elevation. A medium, level fen surrounds this small pond at its inlet and outlet. The fen has zones from tall shrubs to dwarf shrubs and graminoids on a floating mat. No official trail leads into the fen, but it’s an easy bushwhack from an old woods road.

Evening (7 - 10 PM): Guest speaker and business meeting. The speaker will be Scott Bailey (U.S. Forest Service). His talk begins at 7 PM and is entitled “Following Fernald’s Footsteps: Rediscovery of the Calcareous Alpine Meadow”. The evening activities will take place at The Falls Event Center, 21 Front Street, Manchester, NH.

Thursday, June 14

Day: Field work at Muchyedo Banks Wildlife Management Area. This site is prized for its scenic forested shoreline and unusual sand plains. The Muchyedo Banks are a pair of sand banks rising 60 to 80 feet above the Merrimack River. The dry river bluff, sand dunes, and silver maple floodplain forest in this area are all identified as high-priority natural communities for conservation by the NH Natural Heritage Bureau. The land also protects the underlying aquifer formed 10,000 years ago by glacial Lake Merrimack.
